150 Johnson lower Unit issue

First of all Thanks to this site!!!! You all are GREAT!
Two part question 1. got a 1984 150 Power Head that I just rebuilt but the lower unit is not a 1984 is there anyway by casting numbers to tell the year of the L/U

2. My drive shaft is a 2 part shaft and the lower part twisted off at the pinion gear. I'm having trouble getting the broken part out, is there anyway to remove the prop shaft before removing the pinion gear? The pinion nut is off and I can slide the Pinion gear down about 1/4". Also if i get the pinion gear out is there a special method for removing the prop shaft after I get the the pinion gear out?

Is the D/S still stuck in the pinion gear ??
