The head of my 150 hp, carberated, V6 is in the shop for machining. The # 3 and 4 pistons burned up pretty good (detonation from a carberator leak) on the last day of summer. I have read that certain things should be done to help break this engine in. Some of these include retarding the spec timing 2 degrees and mixing oil directly in my gas tank as well as using the stock oil injection system. I understand the reason for retarding the timing, but should the timing be returned tothe spec setting folling a certain amount of time? Also, is there a process to break the engine in??

Thank you!

Mercury recommends that the timing be retarded because of the poor quality of todays fuel, leave it retarded. Mix the fuel to a 50 to 1 mix plus the injected oil for break in, let the engine run at the dock for a few minutes and then run it up to about 1/2 throttle for the next 1/2 hour after that you may run to full throttle just don't hold it there, as a matter of fact vary your speed for the first 10 hour while you finish the break in. Other people will have different ideas I am sure but thats the way we have did it for 40 years with no problems.
