i have a 1978 150 hp evinrude...put in water the other day and everytime i turn key the solenoid clicks.
I tried to jump solenoid and still nothing..a couple of times a little puff of smoke seemed to come out of starter. So i tapped starter with hammer a few times and it worked but now thats not helping..im thinking its the starter and not solenoid.does tha sound right and is there anything else i can do to narrow it down...guy at marina said new starter is $250+ so im wishing it was solenoid but not really sure... thanks Charlie

charlie1975,
Hello there. I would check your battery and make sure it is fully charged and can be loaded tested. Also make sure your battery connections are tight; as well as, nice and shiney clean and that the battery cables are not corroded. You can take off the starter and get it tested before purchasing one and if it is bad it might can be rebuilt or purchase one on-line through IBoats or on Ebay.

If you tapped the starter and it worked it is most likely a stuck brush in the starter. Take it to a rebuild shop.

Use jumper cables and a strong battery direct to the starter terminals. If it cranks normally, it's ok-then check the solenoid. If not, then the issue is with the starter. Before you invest in a new one, disassemble the one you have and check the brushes. They could be going bad. You can get original replacments from the dealer. Also good to clean the carbon out of the starter, and lube the armature bushings. A good option before you have yours rebuilt or buy new. They made two starters that year: Bosch and Prestolite, so check which you have before ordering any parts.

It may be time to pull that starter apart and have a look at the brushes. It will give you a chance to relube the armature bushings while you are in there.

see if the starter is hard to turn by hand. should be able to turn the starter with thumb and finger if not pull the starter and see if the magnets are stuck to the armature. theres no trade in on the old starter so theres no risk in tearing it down and nearly every part is still available
