150 hp 1988 merc

ran boat all day saturday ran great all day, sunday morning engine started fine but had very hard time to plane would not run over 4200 rpms, pulled all plugs and all were wet looking, i,m thinking stator number 4. any suggestions.<br /><br />thanks guys<br /><br />leroy 1988

PROBABLY NOT YOUR PROBLEM BUT I HAD SIMILAR TROUBLE ON MY 135 V6. WAS SOMETIMES LOSING SPARK ON TWO CYLINDERS (4 & 6) WITH NO OUTPUT FROM THE OUTER SWITCHBOX TO THE COILS. THOUGHT AT FIRST A BAD SWITCHBOX, BUT THEN SPOTTED THAT THE INSULATION ON ONE OF THE WIRES FROM THE IDLE STABILISER (3 WIRE DEVICE ON TOP OF ENGINE) WAS WORN THROUGH AND SHORTING AGAINST THE ALUMINIUM CASING OF THE OUTER SWITCHBOX. THIS WIRE WENT TO THE SAME SWITCHBOX TERMINAL AS ONE OF THE RED STATOR WIRES AND WAS THEREFORE SHORTING THE STATOR OUT AS WELL. MUST BE A REASON IF YOU KEEP GETTING THROUGH STATORS, TAKE A FEW MINUTES AND CHECK FOR A SHORT SOMEWHERE. ANOTHER PROBLEM I HAD WAS THAT THE TRIGGER WAS STICKING AND NOT ROTATING AS FAR AS IT SHOULD WHEN THE THROTTLE WAS OPENED, HENCE THE IGNITION TIMING NOT ADVANCING CORRECTLY . YOU CAN EASILY CHECK THIS WITH THE ENGINE OFF, JUST MOVE TO FULL THROTTLE AND SEE IF THAT SPRING LOADED TOP ARM TO THE TRIGGER (ON THE PORT SIDE) MOVES FREELY.

I don't think you have a stator problem. You should check your carbs, spray a small amount of fuel in each carb barrel,while running on ears, if your motor picks up that carb should be rebuilt. ALso check for spark on all cylinders. If one cylinder has no spark change plugs and wires around to see if they are the problem, if not do the same for the coil. If that fails and still no spark in one cylinder your power pack may be the culprit. I would also do a compression check on it. I had the same problem and mine turned out to be the powerpack.
