Hi
Need some expertise/opinions. I want to repower my 23' Bayliner Trophy 1990 with cuddy, fairly heavy boat but i dont know the weight.
I am wondering if a new 150 Etec will be powerful enough, not the HO, for this size of boat with 3 men and full of fuel.
I am hoping some of you guys know the boat and engines and have some opinions about this match if i went this way. The reason is the price of the 150 hp right now are outstanding, best deal i can find for a 150 in Canada. But i am concerned it might not be enough hp for this boat. It had a carbed 1990 carbed 200hp evinrude.
Thoughts?????

What do you guys think about going 25hp over maximun rating for this boat, max 225 found a 250 etec used

New, as in brand new? That's an extremely large chunk of change for a 23-year-old boat. I take it the old motor is no longer with us, or I would suggest a rebuild. What is the maximum HP on the capacity plate?

The rule of thumb is to try to stay with at least 75% of the recommended maximum HP for good performance ;)

Sounds light to me. I have a 150 on a 21' CC and would not go lower; if I liked speed or carried loads i might want a little more. How was the 200 for you? dropping 25% is a big drop.

Horsepower is horsepower no matter how it's generated

I have a "smallish" 200Hp on a 22' boat and I couldn't image trying to run this boat with a 150 hp on the back.

etec technology is really nice, are you well versed on that? What's it weigh compared to the old outboard? I bet it's way lighter, which = better performance I think. I love my fuel savings and low oil consumption with etec snowmobiles. Better emissions than new 4 stroke models, so no stink either. I doubled my fuel savings using etec

ETEC 150 weighs ~ #420/150= 2.8
1990 200 Evinrude ~#450/200=2.25 = 20% advantage to Evinrude

A 150 is too small for that boat. You will need a 200-225.

What about having your existing motor rebuilt? Probably less than 1/3 the price of buying new.

well from what i was told the etecs make so much more power than the older models especially with carbs, so i was wondering what a 150 might be like, i have come across brand including all rigging prop and controls for 12,400.00, 2012 model

Yeah the E-TECs are great but the 150hp still only puts out 150hp. The H.O. engines put out more than the rated HP.

If you are shopping for etecs take a look at some dealers across the border. My buddy is buying a brand new 2012 250 H.O. with all controls and rigging, 5 year warranty for 16,000.
