I could not shift my 1998 evinrude 15 HP into reverse. When I pulled the motor and looked at it, the exhaust housing had pulled away from the shaft. It appears I need to replace the upper motor mounts. Can anyone tell how difficult this is? Also, since my motor is 13 years old is it worth fixing or is it time for a new motor?

New engine? Depends.... I would repair this one.

Has it been a good reliable engine for you? Are you comfortable with it? Over all, do you like it or are you ready for a change? How much do you have to spend?

It is worth fixing. The repair is not too difficult. Sounds scarier than it is. A bunch of stuff has to get disconnected; fuel lines, choke knob, idle adjustment knob, ignition harness unplugged and shift linkages, etc... You'll need a new power head to exhaust housing gasket. Label your bolts as they come out, etc...

A digital camera will serve you well.
Good luck!
