1979 15 HP model # 15954E
Completed tune up new coil paks, plugs, carb. kit, took flywheel off and cleaned contacts and a new fuel pump.
It runs better but I still have a miss that I cannot locate. All of the parts under the hood except for the ones I just listed are the originals form 79.
I have had suggestion of possible wires breaking down and going to ground from time to time. The miss is not regular but irregular instead. Before I sink money into a Magneto assembly and a power pak dose anyone have a suggestion of what to attempt first?

Some refer to a miss which is actually a sneeze. If it is a sneeze it is caused by a lean condition and the way to correct it is to wind your slow speed needle out (counter clockwise) 1/8 turn at a time until it goes away. If it has spark escaping to ground then I agree, night time is the right time to be with the motor you love. Now that was corny. Best of luck. Rick.

When you say you "cleaned the contacts", does that mean you filed the points? If you did, you would then need to re-adjust them. Not doing so could result in a "miss".

I did put a timming light on it so observe the firing. one cylinder seems to flash like it should but the other, every time I hear the miss the light misses the flash. I will attempt tonight to spot arching in the dark.
Good information on "sneezing" I never thought of that either. If it did sneeze would that cause a miss in fire that can be seen in the timming light?

Thanks for the responses, I can now go tinker some more with new information.

The lean sneeze is a carberator adjustment and has nothing to do with the ignition spark.

The contacts I am referring to is the brush looking things inside the flywheel that run around the other brush looking things on the magneto. I do not know what they are called so I referred to them as contacts. I may be wrong but I do not beieve this engine has points, contacts and condenser. Still working on it.

74-76 has points, probably referring to the sensor or the E designation referring to electric start in which case it's got a stator. If it is electric start disconnect the rectifier and restest, if the miss goes away replace the rect. Did the new coils come with wires? If not replace as well.
