Re: 140hp Johnson
Just a guess here, But I'd bet Dhadley will back me when I say 87 octane would be best in that engine..
Bulb not getting (staying) hard could be a couple of things...If it has a check-valve in-line, sticking.....needles not seating in the carbs, or possibly a bad bulb.
Also, with VRO equiped engines, you should have QL77JC4's for plugs, although I'm not sure that would cause your problem...
You may need to puncture the diaphram in the VRO tank cap as it sounds as though you may be getting some pressure build-up forcing oil in, and that WILL make it smoke like mad on start-up, and run rough for awhile. I think it's coughing because your bowls are half oil and half fuel on start-up causing a lean condition.
I would go back to 87-89 octane fuel. Remove cap to VRO tank, with a paperclip cut at a 45 deg angle or so, turn the cap over so you are looking at the inside of the cap and press the paperclip through the center hole until you feel the diaphram pop....you'll feel the clip poke through...this will keep the oil from being forced into the bowls as fuel evaporates.
