I recently purcased a Renken 19' Boat that has a 1979 140 HP Johnson on it. The control that is on the boat is a Mercruiser (motor on but not hooked up) What would I need to make this work on the Johnson? The round red plug is missing from the cable coming from the control box, it was cut off. Can this control be used on the Johnson? Any help is appreciated, my other boat and motor was older and used a 2 lever control and was pretty basic. Is there any wiring diagrams avail for this set up as I do not know where the battery hook up goes too either. there are 2 wires running from control to the gauges in the dash. Thanks

Re: 140HP Johnson Control

You will need to get an OMC control box. The Merc cables won't work and you need a control box with the red plug harness. You may find used control boxes on the web. They are all the same up through 1995. They are literally plug and play. Usually the control box is not wired to anything on the dash-with the exception of a tach. The engine and it's control box run off the two huge battery cables on the engine. Most dash gauges are wired through a master dash switch and fused directly to the battery.
