I found an evinrude 140 on the net and the price looks very nice. I emailed and found that the powerhead was rebuilt with boysen reeds, weisco pistons, and all stainless bolts. I saw pics of the motor and they look spotless. I emailed the guy and he told me that the motor is in great shape with about 200 hours on it since rebuild. He also tells me that the numbers on the side will state that it's an 85hp. I'm told all the necessary modifications have been done to make this a 140hp. Can this be done on an '80 model 4cyl evinrude??? The price is really nice, but I have concerns on reliability. Any comments??

Boysen reed's and weisco pistons regardless of overbore will never make an additional 55 hosepower IMNSHO, no way! I'd much rather have O.E.M. pistons over weisco's too! easy enough to find out if your really interested is to run it on a hydraulic dyno look up the specs for a 140 motor and see how far from the 140's specs this 85 is, I'm sure it won't get anywhere near the 140's rated psi output from the dyno

A 85 can easily be turned into a 140
140 hp is a little to much for a V4, thats why you don't see to many still running.
How heavy is the boat you want to put it on?

It's a 16 foot checkmate. The original engine is an evinrude 140. The original powerhead has problems from the crank to the head (wish I knew that before I bought it and yes I was stupid for trusting a shady mechanic's word) and will cost more to rebuild than a rebuilt powerhead and core charge. I caught this motor for sale on the net and figured I could bolt it up and go until I heard about the 85hp part. That made me hesitant. I'd love to find a 140 or 150 looper in the $1500 catagory, but I haven't seen any out there.

I prefer the crossflow, I think its a smoother running engine espescially at idle.
But in your checkmate you probably dont idle much. I bought a 20hp motor on the net and everything went fine. there was some wondering though. that motor should work good on your boat. If its what he's saying it is.

OK....Here goes....The 140 cross flows make 115 propshaft horsepower. And are great motors. Wiseco pistons are forged and top of the line. Don't lug them and they are great. Boyesen reeds are great. The only thing that hurts them is "spitting" at idle.

An 85 (cross flow) can VERY easily become a 140 (cross flow). A 140 cross flow can't hold a candle to the torque of a 140 (or 120) looper. A 150 looper is a 60 degree V6.

The cross flow V4 is a perfect motor for the 16 Checkmate. What a fun boat.

Good luck!!
