140 OMC/140sterndrive

I was looking at and learning about a 1975 Caravelle with a 140 OMC model 990226A with OMC stern drive model 980703. A couple of questions for you professors of propology.<br />Is this stern drive a stringer 800 or 400 or where could one find out? Is one better than the other?<br />Electric shift?<br />I have been trying to find OMC info, found the year stuff on a site, lots or warnings about early OMC engines and drives.<br />I tried to post pics but cold not figure it out<br />I have gotten a lot of great info here, thanks for all your guys help.<br />Peter

The 140 HP is a 400 stringer. The 800 stringer is for 185 HP and up. Both are about the same except the 800 is stronger and has bigger drive shafts for the extra HP.
