140 johnson what have I got

I have ben given a 140 hp Johnson motor mod. #140843C ser# J00042XX. I need all the help I can get. I know only that it has ben I a shed from 1996 to present. I have all winter to work on it. I would like to replace my 88 special on my bass boat by spring. I need a year of mfg to start with. then I need ser. manual on it. Thanks a bunch lw

The motor is a 1978 Evinrude, manuals can be found at kencook.com, marineengine.com, and most likely ebay. Nothing on ebay at the moment

I new it was a Rude, just forgot everything else around here says Johnson on it. Little disapointed on age of motor, I guess you cant look a gift horse in the mouth.

I have 50 hp johnson year 1996 is it a fitch ? I hear a lot of badmouthing on fitches. It was oil injected but it has ben disconected. It seems to be a good motor , it carries my 17.5 ft aluminum sea ark about 30 mph and is miserly as hell on fuel.It is my boat of choice on the small lakes around here. have a goodun lwr

don't believe they ever made a Ficht smaller than 90HP, I have two 115's that have done thousands of hours and never had a problem,

I removed motor ,controls, gauges and hardware from boat , hung motor from ceiling in my shop, trashed boat. Ill call the motor a spare. Im reluctant to put the older 140 rude in place of the 88 spl on my bass boat. the 88spl burns enough fuel,I can imagine what the 140 would use. Thanks again for all your help. lwr
