140 HP 77 model Water Pump Question

I just bought a new water pump kit with housing from Iboats. The new housing does not have a seal on the top where the drive shaft comes out. Am I missing something here? There is a gasket that fits between the stainless insert and the housing but that is all I can see that seals that area...Nothing between the drive shaft and the housing to keep water from coming out of the top around the driveshaft.....Any ideas???

Thanks for the reply. I did also find another post stating that the housing has not had that seal on it for many years. I assembled the pump and it runs fine on the hose....Even thought my 6 year old impeller was working, it was dry-rotted some and not very flexible.I had very little water coming out of the two holes but with the new pump, lots of water!! All cylinders run a cool 170 deg....Headed to the lake today for a full check out....My advice is to change your pump impeller at least every 5 years....More often is a good thing depending your usage. Just remember, the rubber impeller will dry rot no matter how often you run your motor..
