140 horse Johnson I.D.

I just picked up a 140hp Johnson that has no ID tag. I tried to look for a welsh plug with the I. D. number but no luck. Can anyone help ID this Outboard as far as what year it is? It is not a VRO for sure but what can I look for as a visual to help ID the year? It has the "pee" hole out of the cover base.

Pictures would help but any help is appreciated!

Could you post a picture?

The motor parts will give you some help. Check 1977 - 1984 then 1985-1992. then more recent. The earlier motors had metal tags on the port transom bracket with the model numbers. A lot of the Loopers had plastic stickers on the bracket that did not stay on very well.

I tried to locate the plug but can't find it. There definitely is not a tag on the motor anywhere but the 2 rivit holes where it was are still visible.

Look on top of the cylinder banks, probably starboard side but maybe port.
