14' Munro info.

I have just bought my first boat. It is a Munro 14' Rambler v hull bowrider. A name plate on the dash inicates that the boat was built in London Ontario. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I asked Transport Canada when I had the registration changed if they could tell me what year it was built and received no reply. Is there a department or division that would do that kind of a search? The windshield no longer closes properley it seems that the boat is about 1" wider than when it was new. Is this from roughing it up with a dock or sagging from poor design? I have heard of boats that where damaged from snowload and ice when not stored properly in the winter. Thanks in advance. Thanks to all for everything that I have learned so far. This seems to be a great place to learn.

Dustydiesel. Transport Canada can tell you when the boat was first legally registered, which may be when it was built. They told me
the exact date for my 1967 boat when I was registering the transfer so they have the records there -- keep asking them. However, that assumes your boat was registered right away when new and was never re-registered by some guy who switched provinces or bought it without knowing the registration number, neither of which is necesssarily the case. Have you checked tos ee if Munro is still in business?

I don't like the sound of your deck width problem. Have you checked to see if the windshield is original and hasn't been knocked out of alignment? Try running a taught line from gunnel to gunnel across your boat at the base of the windshield and see if your deck is level or if it is sloping slightly upwards from either gunnel towards the middle. So far as I know fibreglass doesn't stretch across a lateral plane so if it's not your windshield I think your gap exists because the hull is sagging out on both sides. Most FG boat hulls will do this unless they have lateral reinforcement. Because the open front means there's less lateral strength at the deck level of many bowriders, they rely more on the strength of their floors and stringers to hold the hull in place and are never as laterally strong as boats with covered bows. Possibly your stringers are rotten or maybe someone has run the boat hard in rough water and just distorted the hull. Alternately, and not necessarily better, is that someone may have put a new floor and stringers in without putting strapping around the hull to prevent it from sagging out when the old floor was removed -- the result may be the new floor was glassed in holding the hull in the wrong sagging shape.

This problem sounds like another reason other than keeping dry that I don't favour bow riders, but I really don't know if it's a big deal or not without seeing your boat.

Re: 14' Munro info.

Thanks for your reply Suzkidave. It took about 5 min and 2 phone calls to find out the original registration date was july 16 1974. During the one phone call I was told that a serial number should have been on the transom in the fiberglass. The paint is differant so must have been removed during a repair. I checked things out with a straight edge and am wondering how well the windshield door closed in 1974 might be why the company is no longer around. I think I can repair my problem by riveting on a small piece of aluminum tubing or channel. The rest of the hull seems to be solid so we will see how things go next summer.
