I recently purchased a 1999 14 foot pontoon boat with a 1983 35 hoursepower Chrysler engine. The reverse is going out and the marine shop says it will cost between $500 and $1000 to repair it. A friend of mine has a 90 horse power Mariner that he will sell for $800. Is this 90 horsepower Mariner too big for the Pontoon boat? The plate on the boat says it rated for 25 horsepower. Do I try to repair the gears myself or look for another engine? Help-I don't anything about boats.

Hey Moose, <br />I wouldn't put a 90hp on a toon rated for 25hp. That's reeeeally stretching it

. Is the '83 Chrysler running good enough to justify putting that much $$ into? It very well be to your advantage to get yourself into another engine (25-35hp) but that's something only you can decide.

moose, there is a reason your boat is rated at 25hp (SAFETY) i had the same problem with my 45hp chrysler. what is happening when you put it in reverse ?

not to be persuasive but I know you can get a excellent motor for a little more than the repair would cost save your bucks
