I have an old outboard motor 135hp, Evinrude (maybe a 1973 because the boat is a 1973). I would appreciate any help!
What kind of hydraulic fluid can I use for the hydraulics tilt? Or Do I use non detergent motor oil? Where, and How, do I put it in? How do I bleed air? I found a picture of what the motor to the hydraulics looks like. I believe that it is the same as mine. It looks just like mine. anyway... Here it is:

I would list more information but... I would have to look at the boat.. and it is stored about 1 hour away from my house. I am hoping I can get it back in the water before the 4th of July!

Also if there is no hydraulics fluid in the tilt & trim, Will it make the boat feel like it is sinking with the motor running in water?

Sincerely Lisa
Skylor2001@aol.com

Hey Skylor....welcome to iboats.

Go down to the local neighborhood Johnny/Rude dealer and get some tilt and trim fluid. It's what ya' need.

If ya' run into trouble toping off the reservoir, give us a hollar.......

Well.....here's how to do it. Tilt the engine all the way up. Pull the plug from te reservoir and top it off. Now...the book says that the reservoir should be level....right. Drop the nose of the trailer down as far as you can get it. With the reservoir topped off, cycle the engine up and down 3 to 4 times and leave all the way up. Check the level again and top off if needed. Do this untill you don't have to top it off any more. The cycling gets the air outta the system.

Give us a post if you got any questions.

Thanks OBJ! Would regular boat hydraulic fluid work? ....Because I already bought a five gallon bucket of it before I started reading messages?
Also...I edited my post to include a picture of what the hydraulics look like... Would the reservoir plug be at location #1 in the diagram I posted? It seems to be to far down for filling fluid and Do I need a special tool for putting the fluid in?

Look at the cone shape part right below the pump. There will be a large plug screw with a slot for a big screwdriver. That's the fill plug. The hydraulic fluid should work OK. Sounds like ya' got a twelve year supply...:)

The diagram looks like a power trim unit off an old chrysler engine.

Yes it does Jimmbo. Skylor...is this unit on your engine? Could you post the model number please.

TNT fluid comes in a tube that you can squeeze to put the fluid in. Kinda messy.

You can get a generic manual from right here on iboats (see bottom of page) or for reprints of the original manual, see the links below.

http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/johnson/

The model number is located on the port transom bracket on a little metal plate. Or, on the power head, look for a large core plug. The model number should also be on there.

Re: 135hp Evinrude tilt & trim outboard motor lift (1973??)

I have got to ask, because I don't have the manual yet. The tilt and trim was sounding like it was trying to lift the motor but now it just clicks when I flip the switch to try and bleed the air out of tilt and trim. I have been told that it could be one or both solenoids, one just off of the battery, or a loose electricle wire. Have any ideas OBJ?
