I've got a 1350 inline six on a boat with no key. I'm thinking about swapping this engine to another boat but want to test it before messing around with the switch. I would have to swap everything as the other boat is currently powered by an OMC.

I've tried unhooking the wiring harness at the engine and turning it over with a battery connected to the starter alone and get no spark. Am I missing something?

Thanks

Put a jumper on the red and white terminals of switchbox to turn it on. Also run a compression check.........

Ugh. I jumped a wire between red and white with the harness undone. Jumped the starter off a battery and got no spark. I'm really hoping I'm missing something cause I think this engine on a 17' Duo I'm resurrecting would be pretty Phat.

It appears that one cyl is a little weak but I'd love to start it just to see if it's the result of sitting for a while.

Since the quick disconnect disconnects the battery as well, with the harness disconnected you will have no spark. That motor has a battery driven CDI ignition. Connect the harness, jumper the red and adjacent white wires for spark. Now jumper the thin yellow solenoid wire to the red battery cable on the solenoid to crank the motor.

Thanks Chris1956. What you told me to do worked. I had spark. I put the plugs back in and gassed her up and nothing. Finally checked the spark again and found I had none. Bleh.

At one point one end of the jumper between red and white touched ground and sparked. I couldn't tell you if both ends were still in contact with the two terminals or one terminal or the other. I just quickly slapped it off. Is it possible I could have fried something? My little 16 gauge jumper doesn't seem to be any worse for wear. Is there a way to test the module?

There is a ign test on the CDIElectronics web site. It tests everything, but the coil, which is assumed to be good. Look for a battery driven CDI ignition test.
