I have posted the same problem before. I am now over 1000.00 into this and I still dont have it fixed. The boat starts fine and will idle ok. It just will not go over 4000 rpm's till after it has ran for at least 20-30 mins...then it runs great(5800 rpm). I was recently told it could be the stator. anyone have any ideas? I have replaced the thermostats, VRO, and water pump.this is a 1996 model.

Re: 130 Johnson Problems

I pulled the plug wires one at a time while it was running. I did not notice much change in the way it ran with 3 plugs as appossed to 4.

I'm not an expert, but it sounds electrical.

Do you have access to a DVA meter? Check spark when cold with an inline spark tester set to 7/16 of an inch. The spark should jump the gap with a bright blue ZAP!! Let us know what you find.

Far too little info to offer any sort of credible comment.

Re: 130 Johnson Problems

could be a lot of things.

couple of simple tests to rule things out.

- check if timing is fully advancing
- check fuel pressure and vacuum at wot
- when the motor is at 4000 and doesnt want to go further, hit the primer(choke) to richen it up for a second and see how she reacts.

good luck

Anyone know what the stator does when it is going out...Does this sound like a possability? cost alot to have it replaced. I just want to make sure before spending the money...

Use a inductive timing light to diagnose for ignition problems when underway. It will let you "see" a firing problem if there is one.

When were the carburetors last rebuilt?

sounds like trash in carb partially blocking the high speed jet, or electrical, one cylinder not firing all the time.

timing light will tell you if you are getting spark, but will not tell you if it is a good hot spark, need spark tester to check this as mentioned above.

Re: 130 Johnson Problems

I guess I should have mentioned that I did have a compression test and all was good. I am going to try and run some seafoam through the carbs and see if that helps.
