This is what my neighbor wants me to do (hes older). He has a Johnson 140 J140TXCEB with a crack in the lower unit so he wants to swap the lower unit with the Evinrude 125 125183C that he has in the shed. The Johnson is a 1989 model and the Evinrude is a 1971 model. So my question is would this be possible to do?

Thanks!

No it won't work. There are too many difference between the lower units. The primary one being the gear case in the 125 is an electric shift unit and the gear case in the 140 is a mechanical shift. He should look around for a parts motor should be pretty easy to find a 140 with a blown power head produced in 1985 or later.

Thanks for the quick reply! I don't mind helping him with things but if my effort will be for not.... at least I have back up now saying it won't work.
