i just bought a sport jet and i also bought a merc service manual. my question how to add oil and how often to check it, for the gear box. i see a allen plug on the housing just above the pump housing. can i fill it there or do i have to remove the rear section to get to it. the manual doesn't tell you anything.

what manual did you buy?
the gearbox fill and drain plugs are at the fwd edge of the ride plate, the stator must be removed for draining and filling.

thanks for your quick reply. the manual is a merc service manual. i don't what version it is. it mainly deals with the jet drive repair. i couldn't find anything on servicing the gear box. i will look where you said . thanks.

its in the back of the manual under stator oil change and gearbox oil change. the manual,if its like mine, is based on the USmarine/force format and is difficult to read.

Re: 120xr sport jet 1996

I find it helps to have a pump style quart bottle of lower unit lube to fill the gearbox. The stator does require a bit more careful disassembly to tend to, and takes only a few oz. of oil, primarily to lubricate the forward portion of the impeller shaft. I've never found water in either my gearbox or stator, but I recommend draining and filling once year, at the end of your season. That way, you are storing your motor with clean lube with no entrapped moisture to corrode parts.

Good luck
fp

actually the stator is at the aft end :) :) but its a minor techicality :)
but I agree with the rest. water and a few months storage can make a simple cheap repair a bank breaker come spring time.

your saying that i have to take the stator out from the drive (unbolt) to be able to check or change the fluid. sounds complicated to me

not to check just to change it. its not particularly complex and needs to be done regardless of complexity. its also a good time to inspect the impeller and check the impeller to wear ring clearence.
thats why they call it maint. if its not done it can destroy the package.
