Hi all I’m new to the forum and new to being a boat owner. I’ve been reading the threads in the forums and they have helped a great deal in my restoration of a 16’ Peterborough with a 120 omc “project boat. My first question of what will be many is, the model number on the engine is 990243S1, and the manual I want to buy for a 1980 has the model number as 990243C1. My outdrive number is 971871 and the manuals is 982460. I guess my question is, what is the difference in the S and C, or is my boat not 1980. Thanks in advance, Mark.

I think you're drive model is for a 1979 (S was a 1979 and C was a 1980). And that shouldn't make a difference on those two. Should be a full mechanical shift Stringer 400 either way.

It wasn't / isn't uncommon for a manufacturer to have some previous year drives when the build the new models.

Welcome aboard.

if the drive is white - hydro-mechanical
if the drive is silver - pure mechanical

Thanks for the replies, the outdrive is white and I will definitely try to get some pictures up tomorrow. The info on this site is great. Cheers, Buzz.

Here are some photos, 1979 Peterborough bow rider 16’, 120hp OMC. I’ll post some pics of the interior later as I am gutting it as we speak. Any ideas always welcome, cheers Buzz.

Try to loosen the drain screw on the upper gear housing, do not be surprised if water comes out before the oil. The lower gear housing hopefully will not have water. The missing part of the fin can be repaired at a aluminum welding shop.
All the solenoids on the engine are marine specific so do not try to swap them with automotive types.

Thanks Kenny, the unit is (to my knowledge) winterized can I still drain the upper gear housing or is this something I have to wait till spring?

Just loosen the drain screws about 3/4 of a turn to be sure. If clean oil starts to seep out you should be in good shape.

Roger that, just got in from ripping the floor out. Will be checking for the oil in the morn. Thanks again, Buzz.

Ok I just loosened both slot head screws on the starboard side of the drive and the only lube in there was on the end of the screw! I’m hoping it as just drained for the winter? I’m still waiting for my parts manual so I would like to know if I can just go ahead and get some OMC Sea lube and top her up? Thanks again, Buzz.
