I have a 1989 Bayliner with a 120hp force motor that boggs out, sometimes it will run great and then bog down and others it just boggs down right from the start, it seems to have good spark and fuel, the problem does not change when the primer ball is squeezed leading me to believe that fuel is not the problem, the charging seems low(under 13v) anyone have any suggestions for testing ie. coil resistance test? stator test? other fuel tests?? the spark plugs look wierd, no elctrode/gap, is that normal?? any help is appreciated!!

Re: 120hp force bogging out

I tried looking into it last night, and checked for fuel restricitons which from what I see is a common problem but there doesnt seem to be any problem. When running I removed the plug wire from #1 and there was no spark, when attempting to remove #2 (not smart but with needle nose pliers) I could see the spark arching out to the pliers and after removing the wire I felt , heard and saw the spark, if there is no spark out of number one only does that mean its the coil/power pack or could it still be related to the stator, rectifier, trigger, or something else?? any help for testing or anything would be appreciated.

What year is your motor? You mentioned the year of the hull, but the 120HP motors were not produced until around 1990. Makes a difference due to the different electrical/ignition systems used on the various motors.

Re: 120hp force bogging out

I assume the engine is the same year, the number on the engine is 125ld9a, does that meas it is a 125hp?? But when I was trying to swap power packs and see if the no spark followed the packs I found some bad wires at the big junction from the trigger/stator to the packs. The wires fell out of the connectors as soon as I touched them after repairing 3-4 wires and still swapping the packs I retested spark and everything seems better, I swapped everything back and retested and still seems good but the water muffs shifted and fell off and I ended up cracking the water pump housing, just waiting for the housing so I can do a proper water test on the boat. When I put the engine in a bucket of water to see if the pump was working, it started right up with out any need to touch the throttle or anything which I hope is a good sign because it normally took a couple of minutes of playing around to get it to start. Will update after water test, parts coming in wednesday, will probably bucket test it on wednesday or thursday night and put it in the water this weekend.
