My tach is pegged at 6k with the motor off. With the motor running it fluctuates between 5k and 6k.

I'm pretty certain the tach is bad. I tested the rectified per the manual and it checked out. Does anyone what pole it is and a good place to buy a replacement?

thanks!

Try looking for what's called a 20 pole tach I've seen that somewhere, don't know what it means by 20 pole but maybe this will help!
If I'm wrong my apologies! max!

Force engines used a 20 pole tach. There are 20 discrete poles on the stator. As far as I know, it is a special tach common only to Force and a few Merc engines. Teleflex and possibly other brands sell them and you should be able to buy one here on Iboats. Teleflex only makes 20 pole tachs in one version---I think it is the international red series and I think it is 0-7000RPM---but don't quote me. Too late to go down into then garage and look.

According to Teleflex, tachs can stop in any position when the engine is stopped but should zero when the ignition is turned to on with the engine not running.

Before you replace the tach, check the back. Some of them had a rotary button or switch and position 3 was for 12 pole tachs; position 4 was for 20 pole. --Nor to be confused with the tachs that have 1, 2, 3, 4 positions for number of cylinders or pulses per revolution. These tachs do not work with Force engines.
