120 johnson coughing noise

what causes my outboard to sound like it coughs when i am trying to start it?

Is this a new to you engine
did it just start doing this
was it better in the past
is this in the water or on muffs
do you know theres a proper starting proceedure per the manual?

I bought the boat/motor last year. I have problems starting it and took it to a mechanic that worked fixed the primer/choke. It will crank now but after the repair it coughs a couple of times when starting it. I dont have a manual to know the starting procedure. Any information is appreciated.

Thanks for the info. I will use those instructions for cranking the motor and see what happens. Any idea where i could get an owners manual for my motor?
