120 HP Evinrude Trim Problem (1990)

I have a 1990 (maybe 1991) Evinrude 120 HP Outboard. The trim only works in one direction (down). It's not the switch on the throttle or the motor. I tested this by over-riding the switch simply by taking the wires off the switch right on the engine and touching them together. Trim only goes down, the pump sounds normal when going down. It's like something in the circuit just isn't making connection but I don't have a schemtaic or anything to figure out what to do next.

Any help would be great! Need to get it out of the lake soon (Minnesota).

Welcome to the forum.
Don't you have two relays in the junction box, swap the relays and see if it will only go up and not down, if so you have a defective relay.

This is a great suggestion. Now my only issue is, where is the junction box?

You didn't post a model number, maybe this will look like yours.
Look on the engine for a black box, #25, inside there are 2 solenoids. Have some one work the tilt switch for you and see if you can feel one of them click when the tilt is activated. If one clicks in one direction and the other doesn't when the swith is operated in the other direction, that is probably the bad solenoid. Swap them and see what happens.

Thank you Daviet! I took your advice and found the relays. Swapped them around and trimmed the motor right up! I was able to get the boat on the trailer and now know what I need to fix it!

Thanks again! :usa2:

The model number on the motor is E120TLEND. I tried 1990 and 1991 and don't see it in the list of models for the IPL.

The model number on the relay is 4RD 960 388-16. I can't seem to find the right part number on the iboat store. If I sort down by 120 horse evinrude it shows me two different ones but neither say "replaces 960 388-16" or something like that. Does anyone know if either of these two will work?

According to your model #, it's a 1992. The BRP part # for the relay is 0584416.
