A picture would be a big help. Wost case scenario, it may be lower unit seals? Smell the oil. The lower unit oil has a very distinctive odor. Kind of like sulfur or something like that. If so, I would advise buying a manual. It's not that hard to replace the seals. Also while you have the lower unit apart, change the water pump impeller too.

If it smells like gas, then it may be some residual fuel or exhaust. This is probably OK.

If it is black and smells like gas and oil, it is residual oil from the exhaust.

If you have never checked your lower oil, you should replace it to get a baseline and also to see if it has water in it.
