I have a chance to buy a parts motor. Will a 1990 force 125 have enough parts that fit my 1990 120 like the carbs starter lower unit and what else?

Re: 120/ 125 force

1989 was the last year for the 125 force outboard. 1990 begins the 120 force outboard.
starter and lower unit will work for sure.
1990 is where mercury started adding there upgrades so most of the parts for the 125 will not work. Cheaper to find a 120 motor in the long run.

Check compression and the lower unit gear oil. They good??? BUY!!!
The Blue 125's were 87/88/89 Then went to the 90/120hp.
99% of the parts should cross over. But the serial#s should be checked.
They used some Merc parts but mostly Force.
Things like the transom brackets/water pump may be different.Depending on the serial#s
Post a pic of the mid section. That's where most of the stuff changes.

The top carb is cracked. The comp test is 0, 120, 120, 120. Plug holes are stripped. Just going off what the guy is telling on emails.

Re: 120/ 125 force

Just be aware that they changed the lower unit gear ratio right around 1989 - 1990. The 125 HP motors were 1.73:1 ratio. The 120 HP motors were 1.93:1. The 1.93:1 ratio gives you a much better hole shot and in my opinion much better overall performance. In fact all later gear cases were the 1.93:1 or higher (2:1). If it were me, I'd pass on this one, especially if your 120HP uses different coils and the only purpose was to use as a parts motor.

Re: 120/ 125 force

Pnwboat is correct, the gear ratio is different.
I just wanted to add that I installed a lower from a 89 125hp to my 94 120hp and it does the job well.
You do have to watch your tach though because it will rev over 5500 rpms easily.
My boat is a 1994 Maxum 18' open bough, and with the 89 lower I was hitting about 36 mph
With 3 adults and to small children ages 3 & 5 and I kept the rpms just under 5500.
Now with just me I could easily reach 38 mph and over tach easily. But I never let her run over 5500, and I try to keep it at about 5300 rpms.
Hole shot was acceptable with 3 adults and to kids, but by my self its like a rocket.
By the way im running a 15 pich prop and going to get a 17 pich for cruising the lake.
Point is the 89 lower will work but its very very important to watch the tach. Running these motors
over 5500rpms will kill em.

Re: 120/ 125 force

I am new to this area of computers but I am here trying to get some help with a 120hp Chrysler outboard. I have cdi module that is bad..It has 3 wires coming out of the top and 3 wires on the side that go to the coil...I also havea good cdi module type 3 will it interchange with the bad one If so what steps do you take to change it out..

Thanks

Re: 120/ 125 force

It would be best to start your own new post with your questions so more people will see it.
Year of your motor along with hp.
Also explain what motor the type 3 cdi came from.
I believe the presto light cd and cdi are blue, and thunderbolt is black.
Post that new thread and someone will help.

What's a good offer on just the lower unit?

Re: 120/ 125 force

Depends on the year and hp the lower came off of.
If you can get a guarantee the lower is good or your money back then you may pay 600-800you dollars.
If its a purchase as is then I wouldn't pay more than 350 but I would offer around 200.

Re: 120/ 125 force

Sounds like a good deal. Maybe loosen the gear oil drain plug and see if there is any milky oil which would indicate the presence of water in the lowered and also check for any metal. If there is a alot of metal then I would walk away. Water however finds its way in sometimes but as we long as it hasn't sat for years then it should be ok.
125 is a great deal if you can verify the above.
