I have a 12/24 volt trolling motor that seems to run faster when it is set at 12 volts than it does at 24 volts. Is this normal ? It seems to me that it should run faster on 24 volts.

When you switch your motor to 24 volts, do you wire your batteries in series? If you do, please overlook. If you don't, the followng will help. It's located in the BOATING forum.

24 volt wiring November 09, 2001 Boating

-G.

There is a switch on the trolling motor foot controll that is used to switch from 12 to 24 volts. Do the batteries have to be linked in a certain way ? I believe that mine are linked + to +

If your batteries are connected + to - it sounds like you are running a 24 volt system. I don't feel comfortable trying to explain something I'm ignorant about, so I copied 12 Footer's post for you. You can't run your boat's 12 volt system on 24 volts, but you can run it off a single battery in the usual way. I picked up your post because you had gone so long without a reply, but I don't want to get in over my head. If you have any more questions there are some very qualified people here who can answer them. One of them is 12 Footer and here is how he explained setting up a 24 volt system. Welcome to the best forum in the world.
-G.

You have battery#1 and Battery#2.Positive of Battery #1 to trolling motor.Negative of battery#1 to positive of battery#2 with heavy cable.Negative of battery#2 to negative of trolling motor.

EDIT POST:Of course you still have a question! Why does his trolling motor run slower on 24 volts?

Re: 12/24 volt Trolling Motor

Thanks Grizzly. I am going to have to trace the wires, there is a pos and a neg coming off battery 1 and there is a pos coming off battery 2 and a link from pos on battery 1 to neg on battery 2. I just got this boat used, and the plug on the trolling motor looks like it has been changed so it could be wired backwards for all I know.
Thanks again.
