12/24 Trolling Motor Question

I noticed on my last trip to the lake that my trolling motor ran the same on 12 volt as it did on the 24 volt side. When i got home i checked all my connection on the batteries and my 3 bank on board charging system. I found that my charger said i had a bad connection on one battery, but no matter what i did it still showed a bad connection and that bank wasn't charging, but before i done that i checked the trolling motor and it ran the same on 12 or 24 volts but after i cleaned the connections i noticed that while running on 12 volts and switching to 24 volts the motor would almost stop and ran very, very slow. could this be a bad switch or is something else going on? I would appreciate any help.

Re: 12/24 Trolling Motor Question

Typical 12/24 wiring is like shown below. While you may have checked connections, you may still have the batteries connected wrong. If you have one battery that's dead or discharged in the series connection (24V) you will have a lazy motor. Measure the voltage at the trolling motor plug. Red to ground should measure 24V. Orange to ground should be 12V. Be aware that there are many 12/24 wiring schemes on the boat side so if yours is not like this, we need a diagram of what system you have.

Re: 12/24 Trolling Motor Question

How many wires do you have running from the battery to the trolling motor receptacle? How many terminals are there IN the trolling motor receptacle? As I mentioned, there are lots of ways boats get wired but it all boils down to whether or not the boat has a CHARGE/RUN switch on the trolling motor receptacle panel, three or four wires from the batteries, etc. I need to know what you have. The diagram shown is correct for three wires going to the receptacle and a switch on the foot control. If you have four wires going to the receptacle and the receptacle has four terminals, there will generally be a CHARGE/RUN switch next to the receptacle. I have a diagram for that too if that's what you have.

Re: 12/24 Trolling Motor Question

SilverTip, there is "no" run/charge switch so i think your wire layout is right but i will check today on how many prongs are in the plug, thanks again for your help.

Re: 12/24 Trolling Motor Question

SilverTip, i checked this week-end and i have (4) prongs on the trolling moter plug and (4) wires going to the batteries, TWO RED & TWO BLACK. Maybe now you can provide a wiring diagram so i can make sure i have the batteries hooked up correct, I REPLACED THE BATTERIES AND I MIGHT HAVE HOOKED THEM UP INCORRECT, BUT I CALLED MYSELF PUTTING BACK JUST THE WAY I TOOK THEM OFF,thanks again for the help.

SilverTip, thanks again for your great information. I can now see when i replaced the batteries i hooked the wires up incorrectly and with this diagram i can hopefully get it right. i tell people everyday how great this site is but even words can explain how much you guys help us with your knowledge. Maybe ONE DAY i can help someone as you have helped me.

SilverTip you are the man,

Jim
