12/24 trolling help

i just bought a used stratos 285 pro(1989) and am having trouble with the trolling motor.. in the back there are 2 batteries and 4 wires(2red, 2black) the plug on the front has 3 wires. when i turn the switch to 24 volt nothing happens. 12 volt it runs.. how do i get it to run both 12 and 24 or just 24?

jrc,<br /><br />Typically, 3 wire plugs have two "positive" wires and one "negative" wire.<br /><br />Trace the four wires, more than likely the two positives will go to two wires on the plug, the two negatives are probably joined together somewhere.

but why does the motor only work on the 12 volt switch.

If you have a positive and negative on each battery, but have 2 positives and 1 negative at the switch you will only get 12v unless you jumper the the batteries in back.(You would have to series them but you would have to make sure you did it on the with the negative that is cut off.)
