I have a 90hp Evinrude and I was wondering what the difference is between a 90hp and a 115???? Can I make my 90 into a 115? My boat is rated fro a 115 so I don't have to worry about that. Any help would be really helpful!

Hi, Joey. You would save money by trading your 90 for a 115.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

It can be done. I'm sure you've read all the posts about crankshaft rated vs. prop shaft ratings. All that aside here are a few things to keep in mind. No matter what year cross flow you are talking about they both have the same bore and stroke, same intake and reeds, same ignition and same gear ratio. There are differences in the carbs and heads. The latest 115's have a different exhaust manifold. The biggest difference is the port timing. It is possible and fairly easy to port a 90 to 115 specs but you must have the motor completely apart.

We have done this many times and the results depend largely on the boat's ability to respond to small increases in torque. It also depends on the set up of the 90. If it is poorly set up now and you make all these changes and set it up properly it may make a big improvement. The problem is that most of the gain was due to set up improvement.

I would take a look at your current set up and make sure it's at optimum now. Let us know your speed (actual), RPMs, x dimention, water pressure, prop size, prop style and type of boat and we will calculate slip and see where you are now.

Good luck!

Thanks! I wasn't sure what the difference was but now I know. I have a 1989 BassTracker 1600TF with an 1989 Evinrude 90hp. With two people in the boat and full of gear. I run around 40MPH. There is a manual Jackplate on the boat that is a 6 inch setback. The engine has a 20inch pitch, 3 blade SS Trophy prop. The engine is raised around 1 inch above the transom. My RPM is somewhere around 5900 at WOT. The problem that I'm finding is that when I'm up and running I can't trim the motor up far at all then it starts to porpus. Then I have to trim it all the way back until it stops and sometimes it takes a while to stop. The engine has a Hydrofoil on it. I purchased the boat used so I'm not totally positive in the type of prop. i think it may be the wrong size and pitch but I'm not sure. that's why I'm here!! Thanks again!!!

Joe

Sounds like a pretty decent set up. A jack plate makes things a lot easier. The Trophy is a good prop. We need to get a ltiile moe specific about RPM and speed to calculate slip. The next thing I would do is try 4 blade props. I would suggest the Stiletto brand. We have had good luck with those and they do have a lot of lift in them. Remember, you will have to raise the engine to get the benifits of the 4 blade.

JB had a good suggestion. The newer 60 degree V-4's have more torque than the cross flow will ever have. Simply 1950 technology vs 1990's.

Good luck!

More power will make the porpoising worse. You don't need more power. You need trim tabs. They'll accomplish your goal and save you a ton of money, time, aggrivation, and potential legal issues. You're also running too many RPMs. You can have your prop repitched at a good prop shop which again is a whole lot cheaper than beefing-up the motor.

Regarding the Fichts, you'd need new computers and more which puts the price way out in the impractical range. Better to trade up for a ton of reasons.

At 5900 RPM with a 20" pitch you should be going way more than 40 MPH.
