struggling to get lower unit back together after replacing impeller. Dropped lower unit when it was in forward gear. thought it was back together, put in neutral and prop shaft turns clockwise(hear gear clicking ) but not counter clockwise. With the lower unit removed I should be able to turn the shifter gear and feel forward and reverse by turning the prop shaft right ? what should my steps be ?

Forward Gear: Prop will turn (ratchet) CW but will not turn CCW
Neutral: Prop will turn freely in either direction
Reverse Gear: Prop will not turn in either direction

Have another question - There are 2 studs that attach the lower unit to the upper unit. The 5/8 not is cross threaded on the lower end of stud. Any idea where I can get another Stud? Its stainless steel 2-3/4" long ??I looked at a bunch of wegsites and can not find

James, The studs on the midsection were used for many years. I had to canalize one off my '73 Merc to fit my '93 Merc.

They are course thread where they fit the casting, and fine thread to receive the nuts. Use a pipe wrench to remove and install the studs.

You haven't provided a s/n for your engine but if it is a 1979, here is the parts list:

MERC 115 - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

See item 2 under DRIVE SHAFT HOUSING ASSEMBLY. You will see two part numbers, the first being for a long shaft engine and the second for Xtra long.

If yours is a long shaft:

56295 STUD | eBay

Gerry - Thankyou !!! How did you find that. Thankyou that is exactly what I needed 56295 stud
