I found a 1976 mercury for sale in mint condition. It runs great...great compression...etc.. He wants to sell it to me for $1200. is that a fair price ?

There could be a whole lot wrong with a purty motor. This is definatley one case where you can't tell a book by it's cover. Have a mechanic check it over. You could end-up a pretty corpse of an outboard. $1200 sounds absolutely absurd!

Funny thing is about buying anything is it is worth what someone will pay. That being said, NADA price guide listed that motor (assuming it is power tilt)at 260$.

Re: 1150 mercury value?

When compared to the cost of a new motor, $1200 is far from absurd. What would truely be absurd is to not check it out or have it checked out. It is a tough thing, because a motor can run great on muffs and be a dog in the water. If I were selling that same motor, I would never ask something as low as $260, that is absurd. In the end you are taking a huge chance unless you can experience the motor on a boat in the water. Only then can you be relatively sure. You can always offer less, or look around. You could probably find an entire boat with that same motor on it for the same price, but then you are stuck with a hull to get rid of. It is not wise to expect that you will ever pay $260 for a good running motor of that size with power trim, that is a rediculous idea. Good luck though....

That is just a little to high unless it has a new powerhead on it. Shop around and you can find a boat and motor for that. Why is it for sale? where is the boat it was on?

No way! That is way too much for a motor that age. I bought a newly rebuilt '89 evinrude in KC for $600. That motor ran like a dream and also included controls.

Re: 1150 mercury value?

Thanks everyone for your input. The motor is sitting on a 1976 Caravelle 17'. He will take $2000 for the boat motor and trailer. Only problem is that I like my 18' aluminum Starcraft, so I really just want the motor. This owner of this 115hp mercury has owned it for the last 8 years and he only has used Amsoil synthetic 2-stroke oil at a 100:1 ratio. He is letting me take the boat to test it out. I will have my boat mechanic also check it thoroughly. It may make more sense in the end...just to get my 85 mercury fixed, but it would be nice to have a little more power.

My retarded cat can make up a better value than NADA. If you can find a running 1150 for even double that it's a good deal...

For that reason, I wouldn't touch it. Not because of the Amsoil, but because of the 100:1 ratio. I ran mine at that ratio for a couple of years when I was young and stupid, and then did the math on a new motor.

Chill guys.I was just stating what nada said.Do I agree with them? No! They said that my 85 yam 115 was only worth 400$.In missouri I have seen mid eighties 10/20 horse motors sell for 400$ or more.
