i have a 1977 1150 inline 6 mercury outboard it has a fresh rebiuld on the internals and has never ran right and i have been trouble shooting it for quite a while and finally got it running great. the first time i took it out and opened up the throttle a bit it took off but lost power and died this repeated several times so back on the trailer it went and i took it home and found a rip in the gas pump diaphram and replaced that then it would start sometimes and sometimes not so the coil and switchbox tested good and now i need a distributor. Thanks for hanging in there i am to my question these distributors are hard to find and expensive to rebuild i would like to know what years of other 115's would swap with mine and i believe a four cylinder distributor would work if the four window plate was replaced with the six window as the adds say the replacement fit both and come with both windows but they do not say what years.Sorry for being so long but would appreciate any and all help/advice

Any of the six cyl distributors from the early 70,s will fit and you are correct that the 4 cyl one will work if you change the "plate". Make sure you put the trigger window disk in the right way up. mark your old one before you take it out.

I had the same problem so I took a 4 cylinder distributor apart and used the 6 cylinder window disk. You need to make sure that you set that disk in the correct notch on the shaft as there are two of them one is larger than the other one.You can tell on the disk which one goes where. Some disk have a stamp on them which side goes up and some dont mine didnt. So I took a 50/50 guess and I think I got lucky she runs fine and I havent looked back since.I was told at one time that the Original Mercury disks were made of brass or copper and it didnt make any difference which side went up(facing the rotor) but the after market ones that were made of steel did. This has always baffeled me probably because my eyesight is bad and I cant see any difference in how there spaced.I am sure there is a difference which way is up or down concerning the timing.
