:grumpy:Ran it in the spring and it worked fine. Replaced battery with brand new and it will not turn over. All I get is a clicking sound. Solenoid problem? Need help! Thanks

The starter bendix pushes up to engage the flywheel but then nothing happens ie the flywheel does not turn

Probably bad/corroded cables and/or connections....remove each one, inspect, clean(3M pad works good), a bit of grease, tighten up....cables can corrode internally and require replacement...

Remove the flywheel cover and see if you can turn it by hand. Sounding like a locked up engine if the starter drive is engaging but not spinning.

The tilt mechanism works but I will try this cleaning idea Battery is in an enclosed compartment not subject to getting drenched with salt air and spray Boat is a Keywest 186CC

Sounds like a classic textbook case of excessive voltage drop. Could be the cables themselves, a battery switch if installed, or a poor connection of the battery cables to the motor. Or possibly a smaller cable that may run from the battery cable connection point to the starter motor relay.

Put a voltmeter on the starter motor relay and measure the voltage when the key is turned to the start position.

The damp/humid marine environment can play havoc with any electrical connections, in line fuses, etc......it ain't like an automobile where most electrical and wiring are in a nice hot/dry engine compartment.....you've probably got some corrosion somewhere but you can't see it without actually removing the connections....good luck!

I believe everyone is missing a point in the poster's explanation. Starter is engaging, flywheel isn't moving.

Thanks I keep the boat on a trailer in my garage and have not used it in six months.

If the fly wheel turns then the engine is free and the starter is suspect

You seem to be thinking worst case, that the motor is seized/locked up. I am thinking a highly more likely situation where the solenoid engages but there is not enough current and voltage to drive the starter motor.

Even with low amperage, the starter would turn the flywheel some. Just found it sometimes is quicker to make sure you actually have a free turning engine before chasing electrical problems. Why spend a good bit of time cleaning connections and replacing wires then find you have a locked up engine.

When I found the starter's gear in the up position and engaged with the gear on the flywheel I put a starter rope on the flywheel in order to get it to come down. The motor did turn over and released the starter gear. Do not think the motor is froze up.

Also the prop turns freely indicating that the motor is not in gear.

I do have a battery switch installed which may or may not have corroded connections. It too is located in the weather free compartment. I may try connecting the boats cables directly to the battery. As I said the battery is brand new and I put a volt meter on it and it registered 13.86 volts. The best older battery that I have, registered only 12.3 volts and it is 10 years old. I would have bet money on it being the battery.

need to measure voltage at starter, starter relay, battery switch, etc when under load to see if voltage drops too far.

Move meter along the cable path to find where the heavy voltage drop occurs

Cables do go bad internally so do not rule that out until the meter tells you.
Negative or positive sides are suspect problems

Re: 115 Yamaha 4 stroke (2004) will not turn over even with new battery.

The problem was corroded terminals. I was surprised how little corrosion that it takes to cause this problem. I first measured the voltage drop at the starter which went from 12.4 to 4.2 when I had my helper try to crank the engine and me holding the tester on the starter. I then cleaned with emory cloth the battery connections both at the battery and at the battery switch. She spun like a top. My thanks to all of you for taking the time to help with my diffugalties. Tight Lines and calm seas to you all. :joyous:
