115 Tower oil question

Recently I have read several past posts about the benefits of Evinrude XD50 oil. One being less smoke. That sounded appealing so thought I might give it a try in my 1986 mercury 115hp tower. I went to Wally World and found 2 types of Evinrude oil neither of which was labeled XD50. The first was a blueish color, said mineral oil on it, wasn't a synthetic or blend, so I didnt think that was anything but just another dino oil. The second was goldish colored said it was a synthetic blend formula. Exceeded TC-W3 specs. And was pre-mix suitable. After some research I think what it is, is the Wally World version of the XD-100 oil. So my question is. Is it OK to use this oil in my engine at a 50:1 mix and would there be any benefit to it? Or should I just go back to Wally World and get some Quicksilver?

Usually not wise to mess around with different oils.....Quicksilver or a good quality outboard oil is a cheap investment. Make sure you stick with "outboard" oil.

Re: 115 Tower oil question

First of all thanks for the reply! This is Evinrude Johnson super premium 2 stroke outboard oil so I think it is a quality outboard oil. But I think it is the Walmart version of the XD100 which is actually a direct injection oil designed for the Etech motors to use at a 100:1 mix. From what I've read it burns very clean, no smoke, very little if any carbon build-up so no need to de carb motors. I just was wondering if anybody knew of any detrimental effects it may have as a pre-mix on my old tower. I just spent $2500.00 rebuilding this power head last summer and don't want to make another costly mistake. It does say suitable as a pre-mix and exceeds TC-W3 specs. Thanks John.

Re: 115 Tower oil question

The XD50 is a synthetic/dyno oil blend. 50% dynthetic. XD 100 is 100% synthetic.

Any TC-W3 oil will work just fine. Make sure that when they say "exceeds" TC-W3 that is actually IS TC-W3 certified. Evinrudes is but some companies ( cough...Amsoil... cough) say their oil exceed TC-W3 but is NOT actually TC-W3 certified which means it doesnt get used in my outboard.

You also do not want to use direct injection oil in your carb'd motor. Some of it may work (Mercury Optimax?), but I think the e-TEC oil is not suitable.
