115 Mercury low cylinder - the saga continues

This is a continuation of a topic I started on Feb 16. I have an '86 115 6cyl with one low cylinder. Received a couple recommendations for a decarb.
Did the decarb (poured Sea Foam into a nearly vertical cylinder a couple times followed up with a dose of Quicksilver Power Tune). Took the motor out to the river to run the decarb stuff out. Motor seemed to be running a lot smoother. Ran it up the river about 2 miles - ran great. Then it cut off with kind of a clattering sound. I was able to get it restarted but it runs rough and clatters. We limped back to the dock. I pulled the plug out of the repaired cylinder and found aluminum deposits on it! When I first got the motor and pulled that plug I found the same stuff on the plug but figured it was some kind of 'liquid aluminum' stuff since the plug hole had a bad helicoil. Now I know why the helicoil was bad. Now I know why the hole was helicoiled in the first place - aluminum deposits! Hey Fouled Plug, I noticed in one of your other posts that you asked someone if there were aluminum deposits on the spark plug. What is this a sign of (other than major problems)?
I've rebuilt a couple car engines and dirt bike engines. Is dissassembly/reassembly of this motor possible for the home mechanic or are there a lot of special tool required? Is sleeving the bad cylinder a realistic fix for this motor?

Well alvin, you had a dead hole an its deader now...LOL....hope you dont feel bad wastin yer money on decarb....the aluminum is comin off the top of the piston, obviously scored/detonated prior to your decarb...in this situation the only thing that will help is takin the motor down and replacing the damaged piston, and repairing what killed it in the first place [fuel/ignition/overheat]...this is not an easy motor to reassemble....

Still hope. You have a detonating cylinder. Clean out cylinder with carb. cleaner and wd-40. ( removing carbon off top of piston) Try a colder plug, NGK-- buhw-2. Make sure you are not running lean. (no gas getting to cyl.) Make sure you are not running hot. ( water pump working? ) Don't run WOT for long times.
My 60hp has same problem, been running it for over a year. Has not let me down.( konck on wood)
Or get a rebuilt powerhead. iboat can fix you up with one.

Alvin, that is a dead duck. I wouldn't run it anymore unless you want to trash what's left and row home. :(

The engine is damaged. It may run OK for awhile, but you'll always wonder if you're going to make it home. You either have aluminum comming off a piston or the dome of the cylinder. There is no separate cylinder head on that engine, so that would mean block replacement. If it's the top cylinder it was caused by a weak water pump. Detonation has been a problem on those engines - especially with today's fuels. There are special tools needed to rebuild it - flywheel puller, piston installers (you assemble the piston/rods to crank and insert the whole assembly).
