I have a 1987 115 Merc OB. I replaced the trim sending unit when I bought it last year, but it reads backwards, up is down and down is up. I can't see how I could install it backwards, but I guess that is a possibility. I have also switched out the gauge, same result. I tried reversing the polarity, it just kept the gauge pegged at up. I'm wondering if there is a port and starboard unit? Mine is mounted on the port side of the motor, maybe I have a starboard sending unit? I'm not sure if they even make two different units, bu that is the only thing I can think of....I'm sure it will be something simple that I have over looked, always is! Thanks!

Yep...you have the wrong unit...there is a starboard and port sening unit....if it worked prior, then you have the wrong application.

Be sure you are using a Merc Trim gauge as Johnson's are backwards from Merc...Found that out the hard way of course....

Thanks, I did check that, the vendor even sent me a second gauge. Both were labled for Mercury and I had the same results with the second one. I guess if all else fails I could order the Johnson gauge, lol!
