115 mariner stuck in reverse

I have an 85 mariner 115 which is stuck in reverse. It happens after trying to shift from neutral into reverse and it started grinding then took gear. As soon as it took gear the motor quit and now it's stuck in gear and I don't know how to get it out. Any ideas on what caused it or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated.
