I have a clean # 3 spark plug it seems to have water in the cylinder. Is there any way to cure this problem with out rebuiled. or is there a way I can make sure that the problem is water. I have totally redone my fuel system and carbs.I have replaced the high tension wire. I have 125 compression in all cylinders. but yet my problem still won't go away my motor seems like it has a cough not a back fire. it sputters at idle and low rpm but clears up at high rpm.when I am on the water when I put it in gear it dies I can give it full throttle and get it to go but it is real slugish but as I continue to go it starts to clear up. I can run fine but when I bring the rpm down it starts to cough-sputer but will run. The motor starts up fine every time. any answers to my problem?

A V-4 motor will start and idle great on just 3 good cylinders. It will not perform with a load though. I would pull the head on the bad side and inspect the head and cylinder. Clean the head and re-install with a new gasket and hopefully solve the water problem. There may be other problems but this would be the most common and the easiest to fix. Good luck.

Hi Chaos - had a similar problem to this on a 40Hp Merc - what it turned out to be was the exhaust side cover (on the Merc pressume yours would be the same). Water was leaking through a coroded exhaust side cover plate from the water jacket. The water was then getting into the crankcase from there into the cyclinders. Not terribly expensive to repair - exhaust side plate was $60 AUS. + gaskets.<br />Hope this helps
