Ok, there's a boat I am interested in (17' Crestliner) that has a non-running 115 Johnson Fast Strike. Is this an engine with known issues or one worth considering fixing up? I don't have any details yet but will follow up with the seller unless the verdict is to stay away. Thanks!

year, model #???
BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Re: 115 Johnson Fast Strike Motor question

Thanks. Well, I have more information. It seems the current owner (title is in his name) never actually used the boat. From what the prior owner told him the engine seized up when the oil injector failed. The bottom line is the boat valuation has to stand alone as if there were no engine at all... which it actually seems to. I just get nervous considering the seller having owned it for years but never having used it. 2006 was the last year of registration.

It's a very clean looking '97 Crestliner Sportfish 17' for $3,800 OBO. One way or another I will likely get something this weekend as there are a few Starcrafts I am going to look at as well - older/cheaper
