My mechanic tells me my carbs are worn, and that he is trying fruitlessly to find some to rebuild. But he says he might be able to put an O-ring in on the butterfly for a fix that won't last as long as we would like.

#1 are these carbs available rebuilt? Used but not as shot as mine? From whom?

#2 If we can't find one is there a fix? The motor has good compression and runs great other than this carb problem.

Total horsecrap. I've NEVER seen a merc side bowl carb wear out. they can get clogged or dirty, but they don't just wear out.

I've got 50 of them here. I know of what I speak.

What symptoms led you and he to believe there was a carb problem at all?

-W

The symptoms?

Power packs replaced last year.

The motor has been erratic -- always idles ok, first it would go to 1900 rpm and start cutting out.

Cleaned everything out including the carbs and it ran fine for a day (5000+ rpm and zoom), sit up for a week and it would idle but not much more.

Then flushed the tank again, checked the hoses again and it ran fine for an afternoon. Then sit for a week and the same old problem.

Bottom line is it runs great at low speed but is erratic at all others despite recent carb cleaning. Or what I paid for was a carb cleaning....

Mechanic showed me slack in carb body where there was air between the butterfly shaft and the carb body and said that was the most likely source of an air leak, could keep it hard to start and erratic otherwise.

His thought was that a washer and an o-ring between the spring and the carb body could shut off most of the air. Showed me several used sets where the wear was greatest on the bottom.

LATEST UPDATE -- We found that the tube that recyles gas down the right side of the motor near base had a leak and was spraying -- replaced. Cranks up OK and goes to 4500 rpm. Lake test pending.

If my mechanic is the problem, that is the easiest part to replace.

That tube is prolly not the whole problem. Sounds like recurrent fuel system crud. Note that any slop between the butterfly shaft and the carb body will only affect your idle mix. Since it idles OK - it's obviously not an issue.

Wear is greatest on the bottom because of the spring, but I've never seen that wear be a being issue in any troubleshooting. Clean the carbs again and run it on a brand new 6gal portable tank for a bit. There's something else at play here besides carb bodies. Get a mechanic who can actually troubleshoot an inline 6.

-W
