Hey guys looking at a few boats and they have the evinrude 115's on them. Two are 96 and one is a 98. Not sure of the hours yet, but wondering if these are good motors, anything to look out for. Thanks

Great motors. But....... just see what you can learn from the maintenance history.

Look at the heads (the paint) for evidence of removal or over heating. The paint will be slightly discolored and or chipped off at the head bolts.

I would check the compression and ask about the impellar.

Now with that said...... if one is a FICHT I would avoid that model ;) which has a history of minor problems.

Re: 115 Evinrude

You need to be more specific for any real answer to your question. In 1996 OMC made two very different V4 115 engines. One is the old 90 degree block/crossflow model, the other is the newer 60 degree looper model. Nothing about the powerheads is the same. In 1998, Evinrude also made two different 115 60 degree looper versions. One is a carbed version, the other is a direct inject Ficht model. There are many perceived differences in these two models also. So, please provide some further clarification of just what you are comparing. Model numbers are really helpful.

Re: 115 Evinrude

I will get the serial number this week when I go to look at it. Didn't know there were two different 115's in 96. Any pros or cons between the two? Also I currently run a 125 merc outboard 1994 on a 17ft rinker, both boats I'm looking at are the same 17ft Four winns with the 115 evinrude on them, is there a big performance difference between 125 and 115. I do realize they are different brands with different cylinder setup-just wondering. Thanks

Re: 115 Evinrude

the 125 merc probably weighs about 40 lbs more than the 115 rude..but you will be losing 10 HP. I recommend a test drive and make sure the boat will do what you want it to do..I have seen a 115 on a 17' boat do well on one boat and then not so well on another 17' boat. hull designs and weight can make a big difference. I like the 60 degree motors, (not the Ficht) ..I have a 60 degree 1995 150..cranks and idles very smooth..and runs out nice. But my dad has a 90 degree 1999 130 that runs great also..and I have some older 90 degree motors that run out nice...having said all that I am getting away from OMC motors and starting to be strictly a Yamaha man..I have had much better luck with them, and so has all my friends/family...remember cash is king right now, be patient and get what you want...lots and lots of boats for sale out there.

Re: 115 Evinrude

Hey guys, it's been awhile but I am taking the boat for it's test spin in a couple of weeks. Anyway the motor is a 90 degree model and compression was 120 psi across the board. I've done a ton of google surfing on this motor and seems to be pretty bllet proof. I am just double checking if their is anything with the 90 degree model I should be looking for besides the normal outboard stuff. Model is J115TLED. Thanks

Re: 115 Evinrude

the 60 degree models are more fuel efficient, and they have less trouble with over heating...i think the crossflows had flingers that get clogged or stuck int he water passages. i have seen people post of them often. the t-starts are a pain to get at as well

but I have two 60 degree motors and had an 88 special which was basically the same motor as the 115....sold the 88 special...blew a ring

I think it is easier to find the crossflow parts used than the loopers

Re: 115 Evinrude

The crossflows are a little more sensitive to today's crappy fuels. They tend to gather carbon around the ringsets. An annual dose of Bombardier Engine Tuner will keep your engine running for many years. That's pretty high (good) compression-considering the bathtub heads on that engine.

Re: 115 Evinrude

I'd go for the 60* models as long as it's carbed and not a Ficht.

Re: 115 Evinrude

So on the same line of thought and not knowing much about these Rude engines, I'm looking at a Rude 150 hp/2000 model-this is a Ficht fuel injected motor. What can I expect out of this motor and have any of the above issues been resolved regarding a 2000 model?
Would you buy one with low low hours?

Re: 115 Evinrude

Green, You should start your own thread on this subject. The last year for problem Ficht engines was the last year OMC was in business-1999. The 2000 Fichts were made by Bombardier and they made significant improvments over the OMC engines. Should not be any problem, other and normal wear and tear of the current owner.
