just rebuilt the carbs and motor seems to run well on the hose, no leaks and primer ball gets had with no leaking.
when i tilted the motor up with out the intake cover on both carbs leaked fuel quite a bit. is this normal? seems like alot of fuel to me?

Mine leak out some fuel too on my Johnson when I tilt the motor up all the way. Bowls full of gas and gravity is what I figure. With the baffle on there is a drain hose on mine that dumps it down the shaft and makes a mess.

Re: 115 carbs leaking when tilted up

The carbs from the early-mid 70's always leaked fuel when tilted up. Pretty common. The later the carb, the less they tend to leak. Leakage on your 83 should be some dripping, but not a wholesale leak. In order to reduce this problem, the factory airbox should be run on this model. It has provision for a drain hose which will connect to a port on the front of the engine. Any excess fuel will accumulate in the bottom of the airbox and get recirculated (sucked into) the bottom cylinder when the engine is next started. The engine will smoke a little when first started, but will stop after 30-40 seconds. Be sure the airbox cover has the cork gasket installed properly to keep that excess fuel inside the airbox-instead of dripping into the lower cowl. I glue cork gasket to the inner airbox lip so that it stays properly in place if I ever remove the outer cover.
