110J after few hours running have to push choke for power

I previously thought I had power pack or stator problems with my 1988 110 hp Johnson motor. I took the boat out yesterday and ran about 3/5 the 20 gal tank dry when my losing power problem started again. I pushed the pump and no difference. I hit the choke like a previous message suggested and the motor began to accelerate. after a little running the motor appeared to run normal again without the choke? I wonder if I ran through the problem? The odd thing is it appears to lose power after a new startup after hours of running or several starts and stops. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Don

Only thing that comes to my mind is to insure that the fuel tank is venting freely.

thanks for the reply OB. I checked the venting and it appeared to be OK. I tried to check the pickup tube and that turned into a mistake. I ended up rebuilding a pickup tube and it was ok. When I started to pump the ball to check the pressure, I felt something in the bulb. I pulled it apart and pieces fell from the ends, I assume it was part of the bulb, but it was freely floating in the fuel. I replaced the bulb and pumped it back up. I will not have an opportunity to run and check the operation until next Sat, assuming the weather is ok. Thanks again.

Hope you found your problem.Post back with the watertest results and let us know if that was your gremlin.Consider that the anti-syphon valve on the tank fuel fitting may be defective as well. You can either remove or replace it.

Well it's been a while since I have tried running the motor with the new bulb. Sadly it did not solve the problem. To make a long story short, I finally saw water on the end of the spark plug. I pulled the gasket and it was in bad shape, the metal ring literaly broke. I reinstalled the new gasket and ran a full tank of gas dry. In the process I managed to get 30 Spanish Makeral in the boat. It is nice not to have to worry about getting back to the hill. Thanks to all, this is a great site and I will try to pitch in.
Don
