I am helping a friend with a 72 model 9.8hp mercury and we have a fuel problem, it will run good at idle but as soon as you increase throttle it just loads up. First we checked compression, it was 125 on both, second we checked fire thru tester, that revealed a real strong blue spark on both, lastly we took the carb apart, everything but the soft plug and blew it out with carb cleaner and air. Put it together, ran it in the tank and adjusted the low speed and it did pretty good. We took it to the lake and same old problem, loading up with alot of gas smoke. Just by chance my son was playing with the gas hose and pumping the bulb, which changed nothing, and he kinked the hose-- it took off like a wild cat!!! So we started kinking the hose and it ran great, that told us we had a fuel problem for sure. We brought it home and I got on this great forum again and found some float adjustments. We adjusted the float--- the spring in the float was shorter than 5/64, and the gap between the needle and the secondary lever was about .065-.070. I set everything like it should be and readjusted the low speed and everything was running pretty good, still loads up a little, and thought that would work it's self out with use. Took it to the lake to run it and it is doing the same thing just not quite as bad, but still loading up, we can kink the hose and away it goes, is there something I am am missing? Any help would be appreciated.

I know you said you cleaned the carb, but when was the last time it was rebuilt?

We took everything apart that would come off except the main butterfly and the soft plug but we didn't have a kit to back with. Don't know the history of this motor it is new to both of us, but I think it sat in a barn for who knows how long.

Anybody have any ideas? I am thinking that by reducing the gap between needle and the secondary lever to about .030 that it might let less fuel into the bowl. also should the spring on top of the float be extended farther than 5/64?

UPDATE!!!!!! After carefully going thru the carb and the schematic I found that the carb didn't even have a high speed jet in it. Put one in it out of another carb and away we go.
