I am a scuba diver who is looking to get myself, one to 3 other divers, and all our gear to and from near shore dive sites. I recently purchased a 10ft zodiac inflatable that should do the job for two divers at least. The transom is rated up to a 10hp outboard. I have done some research, am mechanically inclined, but have no experience repairing motors. I have come across one two-stroke '91 Evinrude that unfortunately would be bought unseen after having been stored for several years and needs a "tune up and cleaning" ($700). I also have seen a '98 two stroke Mercury lease return with a 60 day dealer warranty, also unseen ($1000). Does anyone have any advice on these "deals"? Also, any concern regarding the ban of two-stroke motors on California waterways (where I am)? Any words of wisdom about other places to look for quality bargain motors? Thanks in advance!

Can't help you on a California ban on 2 strokes but I would go with an engine that has some warranty on it providing you can get enough use out of it in 90 days to see if everything is ok with it.....just my two cents worth.

I have not seen or heard anything "good" about motors that have been sitting up for a lot of time, nor have I heard good things about "lease returns". I would consider buying a new one since you are not familiar with OB motors and maintenance. Hope this helps...

CA LAW-Any engine MFG. prior to 2001 can still be brought, sold, and used in CA. The law prohibits the sale or purchase or use of any 2 stroke built in 2001 and beyond.MY 5$ worth go with a new motor. You can get a 9.5 HP shoping around @ $1200.00
