100hp Evinrude manual release valve leaking

Up until this year my trim has worked without any problem. But recently it just stopped working all together. I rewired my solenoids, they work perfect. The trim motor still runs, for both up and down, but the engine does not go up or down. I then lifted the motor up and down and noticed that the manual release valve was leaking and also noticed that the o ring had worn out and fallen onto the ground. I would just replace the o ring but the problem is, I can't get the screw out. You seem to need a special tool to take it out and get an o ring over it, you cannot just unscrew it. My question is, would just a faulty o ring on the manual release valve really cause the engine to not lift up or down? or would the engine lift up slowly and then just sag down? All other o rings are fine, fluid is full. I am ver confused and frustrated and ready to explode!!! Any help would be exellent. Anything at all. I was considering taking the entire unit apart to get the o ring in, but is their a special tool that can take that screw right out of the manual relase?????
HELP!!
Thanks
Craig

The release valve is screw in, the blocked with an snapring, should screw out pushing the snapring out. The snapring is there to keep you from screwing the valve completely out and dropping overboard.

Thanks!
so does that mean that I can take it screw out by pushing on the snap ring? i wasn't quite clear on that, and again do you think that a faulty release valve would cause the motor not to move up and down although the trim motor is running?

I just keep turning the release valve to the left, will push the snap-ring out, discard the snap-ring, check the seal on tip of valve. If the seal on tip of valve is bad, t/t will not have up/down hydualic pressure.

In that case you will have to remove the snap ring with a screw driver or snap-ring plyers.

On my motor after removing the snap ring I still
couldn't get the bloody thing out...

I am currently looking for a parts manual that
describes the old 1969-1972 V4 Power tilt stuff.

My tilt currently goes up and down just fine, however
it slowely goes down on it's own accord sometimes. Which leads me to suspect the manual bypass valve.

But if anybody else has any clues, let me know.

Mike
