Can I use 100% synthetic 2 stroke Penzoil for my 1998 GTX? It has a fresh engine in it. Maybe 10 hours.

I dont know these engines, does it have power valves? If not it will be a fine oil if your engine requires a TC-W3 oil. I would break it in on a conventional oil for the first few hours though (whatever the rebuider suggests) at double the required mixture.

Bombardier recommends a low-ash API-TC rated oil (not an ashless TC-W3 oil) in their PWC with RAVE valves like the '98 GTX. <br /><br />Some of these oils are getting hard to find. So I'd stick with the Bombardier oil. Or look for some Castrol, since Castrol worked in conjunction with Bombardier to make their PWC oils.

If infact these engines do have power valves, I would find an Amsoil dealer near you and use the Amsoil Interceptor oil. This oil is designed for these engines and one of the best on the market.

I do not think that the Pennzoil is API-TC Rated, so the answer is NO. Like TheOilDoc stated, its becoming difficult to find. Just go to the Amsoil web site and it will be delivered to your door. Generally cheaper by the gallon.<br /><br />We are not just foolin ya, there "IS" a big difference in API-TC AND TC-W3.

msd58,<br />If you are one to follow mfgs specifications...You may want to check to see if Amsoil has a certified API-TC rating or if just advertised to use where that rating is specified. As in Amsoil's advertising to use TCW-3...it leads the consumer to believe their oil is NMMA TCW-3 certified but it isn't. Therefore, it doesn't meet mfgs specifications without the official blessing from NMMA.<br />bp

I have a 1999 GTX, and trust me...stick with the Seadoo/Bombardier 2 cycle oil recommended for the GTX models. It took two years, but finally mine is 'gummed' up using Pennzoil Synthetic Blend and 100% Synthetic. It's not worth trying to save $25 to $50 per season.

Thanks. Is the Seadoo/Bombardier 2 cycle oil available online? SeaDoo dealers in my area seem to only be around a short time.

You had trouble with the Penzoil synthetic because it wasnt an API-TC oil.<br /><br />Here is a "Quote from another Bomardier owner.<br /><br />"I bought a new 1996 Seadoo PWC from a dealer who told me "point blank" If I used any other 2-cycle oil other than the Bomardier oil, my warranty would be VOID! I told the sales person as well as the owner of the store to "PUT IT IN WRITING"!<br /><br />At first they said they would, but then talking a few minutes longer, they would not do it! I was very mad and when I returned home I called the 800 number for Bombardier customer relations and told the man on the phone what had transpired at the dealership. He said,
They can not tell you that, as it is against the law for them to say that! He then asked what kind of oil did I want to use? When I told him Amsoil synthetic, he chuckled, and said, "that's probably the best oil you can get for a 2 stroke oil.[End Quote] Needless to say, I have been using it since, and will continue to do so".

I have just aqcuired a 1990 Sea Doo GT. I suspect its been run on TCW3 2 stroke outboard oil for the last few years. In fact, the oil tank is about 3/4 full. Will it hurt for me to run that dry, then switch over to API-TC stuff?

Maybe it will and maybe it wont, I would drain it, clean the power valves, do a good decarb procedure and start with an API-TC oil.

Whats a power valve? I haven't seen any mention of them in my Clymer shop manual. I have the Rotax 580 cc/55 hp engine. I do know it has some type of rotary intake/exhaust valve.<br /><br />Thanks for the advice!

You can find the Sea-doo oil on-line or at any dealer. Look for XP-S oil. It comes in both the less expensive mineral or more expensive synthetic. Most oil brands make TC oils, but they may not be easy to find. Castrol Super 2-stroke is one. And Penzoil makes one called "Outdoor" that specifically says it's ok for Rotax engines. There are many others too. <br /><br />A Sea-doo R.A.V.E. valve stands for Rotax Adjustable Variable Exhaust. <br /><br />RAVE is basically a guillotine valve placed in the exhaust port of the engine block. The valve varies the exhaust back pressure that 2-strokes use to create power. Closed when at low rpm and opens as rpm is increased. On these motors it is forced open by exhaust pressure and forced closed by an adjustable spring. The valve slides and is located in an area of the engine prone to carbon and gumming. However, they are virtually maintenance-free if the proper oil is used.

Re: 100% Synthetic Penzoil 2 stroke for SeaDoo?

Sea Doo Oils aren't going to be a problem as we have a dealer nearby. I'm going to get over there soon.<br /><br />I also just looked at my shop manual (1988-96 models). Seems the RAVE system was only featured on type 787 engines. I have a 587 engine, so i guess thats one less thing i need to worry about.<br /><br />Again, thanks for the advice!<br /><br />ed
